COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Valley Trading Post

I enjoyed our visit to the trading post. I have driven on that road a bunch in my life and never really noticed it. It was great to hear the family story behind it. I think it really shows how close families can be when there has been something passed from one generation to the next. It was also interesting to hear his take on debit and credit cards. I agree to a point that we rely too much on cards but the world is changing and it seems there is a lot of things you have to use a credit or debit card for. I am glad I got to see the trading post.

Indian Center

I had heard about the Indian Center from my husband but I hadn't got the chance to go inside. (He said they had really good Navajo Tacos!!) I am really glad I finally got the chance from this class. I think it is great that there is a place for the Native Americans to go for resources. I wish more people knew about it and were able to support it more. I wish we could have talked to the lady from the front (I can't remember her name..sorry) earlier and been able to ask more questions about the center. Other than that I think it is a great place for our community.

ENLACE

What a great place for our community!! I had seen and heard the name ENLACE, but never knew what it was. I really enjoyed this visit and learned a lot. I think Farmington is very lucky to have such a great place for people to go to get help and resources. I was so surprised to see all that they had to offer and how close the staff was to eachother. You can tell that the staff is like a family and that they extend that relationship to the people who go there for all the different things they have. It is great that they have classes to help spanish speakers learn english. Being that there are more and more monolingual students coming to the Farmington district, this is a great resource to tell their parents about.

Farmington Special Preschool- (Country Club
The special preschool was so neat to see. I think it is wonderful that students with special needs have a place to go and learn things like other children. I really liked the atmosphere...you could tell that the teachers and aides loved what they did and they were there for the students. I think it would be a great experience to work in a place like the special preschool but also a challenge. I believe that the teachers of special needs classrooms have the biggest hearts and are truly special people!! This was definitely one of my favorite places we have visited so far.

Farmington Museum

Last semester for Coila's special needs class, we were to find a place in the community that would be a good resource for students, parents, or other teachers. I chose to check out the museum because I had never been in there before. I was able to meet with Sarah Cook and talk to her about everything they offered the community. I was so surprised by all the things that went on. I really wanted our class to have a chance to meet Sarah. I did not get a tour last time but I am really glad we all got to this time. I really liked the behind-the-scenes experience we got. This is such a great resource for our community that I wish more people would support.

 Farmington Library

I really liked the field trip to the library. I love how it is set up and I go there a lot for children's books, not only for my other classes but also for books to read to my boys. I am glad we got to take a tour because I never realized there are so many videos, magazines, etc. I usually just use the teacher resource area or the childrens section. I knew the big doors opened in the children's section but I just thought it was storage for props for story time. I didn't not know there was an awesome room for story time! I will be taking my boys there for storytime this summer. The library was a fun field trip.

Sycamore Community Center

This place was so unexpected. I knew it existed but I didn't know where it was and was really surprised at how nice it was and all the great things it offered. I think it is so great that there is a place for kids to go to just be kids and not have the pressures of school. I really hope they get the skate park they are trying for. I wish I would have been able to stay longer and observe the kids and the fun activities they were engaging in. I will definitely plan on using this center as a resource for my own classroom, telling parents about it and planning field trips to the facility. I am so glad that area of town has such a great place for children and teens!!
